Woke up on Christmas Day in 2009 and thoughts fell to my granddaughter. I then wrote this poem in probably less than an hour, barring some subsequent editing.
When first penned, the poem was called “Jessica”, because that is who it was for. However, I decided on the revised title, when I submitted this poem for the poetry surgery with Kona MacPhee. It is much more appropriate, particularly for a more detached reader, should there ever be one apart from my family, of course!
Once again the theme of family arose, without asking, and the need to fill up your children with as much love as possible, so that, when they are old enough to take their own responsibility for other lives, they will have some of it spare to give to someone else.
